A while ago, i promissed Rina some brazilian recipes…
Well, here’s another one. This is for caipirinha. I’m not much of a drinker, but this is one the best there is in terms of summer drinks… And there’s not much to it.

You take some lemons, slice them thinly, put them in a glass, cup, whatever, and – i’m thinking grinding, but that’s not really the term… You take the juice by squeezing the lemons, but you can’t break it, can anyone understand where i’m going? Well, you squeeze the juice, add some sugar, and cachaça, a brazilian distilled alcoholic thing from sugar cane. Or you can use vodka too, which works just fine. Toss in some ice cubes, and that’s it…
Make sure to keep the lemons in the glass, cause the next time you prepare it, you use the lemons again (it’s really better tasting that way), and we usually just pass the same glass around, it’s a comunity thing… Also, prepare them right before you drink. It works as a ritual really, around the grill, while on barbecues, or the beach, or watching soccer on tv… Is it clear? I’m told i have trouble making myself be understood… Yeah right, like i didn’t know that.

Thank you, thank you! I love caipirinha–anything with mint and lime–so this is great. Useful tip about substituting vodka for cachaça. I think the term you were looking for is “muddling.”
I bought the condensed milk and am going to try the candy recipe this weekend.
Comment by Rina May 5, 2007 @ 9:46 pmI find that cutting the white core out of the lime, rather than slicing it into round wheels can make the drink even better because the white core when muddled is quite bitter. There’s a video I’ve posted online on google video on how to muddle up a caipirinha, here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-9068722155758179455&q=how+to+make+the+perfect+caipirinha
